1. What kind of piano do I need?

Generally, a grand piano or baby grand of good quality and condition is preferred so that guests may enjoy the full variety offered by staples of the repertoire. Please contact PianoKey with questions specific to your situation.

2. What is the artist fee?

Artist fees vary dependent upon setting.  Please contact PianoKey for a quote.

For a solo piano recital, there are several ways arrange compensation:

  • The host can pay PianoKey directly.
  • Suggested donations at the door with the aim to “raise” the fee through guest contributions.

In some cases, the host may agree to fill in any deficit created between received donations and the agreed upon fee.

  • In addition to (or lieu of) the agreed upon fee between the host and the artist, another alternative may be to “pass the hat” after the concert. This is, of course, similar to the way any performer might pass the hat following a performance.
  • In other cases, there may be two or more hosts that may split the fee.

3. What are the total costs?

Piano Tuning prior to the performance is strongly suggested. Reception expenses, which are optional, should also be factored into any budget.

There is a wide range of possibilities for every aspect of the concert.  Please see Tips and Ideas for Hosting a Home Concert for more details.

4. Should I plan a reception?

This is completely at the discretion of the host.   The following are common reception ideas.

Culinary options are unlimited. Creative connections between music programmed and food offered can be forged for special occasions.

  • Wine
  • Hors d’oeuvres
  • Finger sandwiches
  • Dips
  • Wine and cheese
  • Tea, Coffee
  • Full Meal
  • Potluck Dinner
  • Feature a specific cuisine

5. How long is a concert?

Concerts can be two halves of approximately 30-40 minutes each, with an intermission, or one hour with no intermission.

6. When is the best time for a concert?

The most popular time slots are Friday and Saturday evenings, or Sunday afternoons.

Weekday concerts have also been met with great success.

7. What time of day is best?

Anytime! Here are some excellent times to present daytime performances:

  • Lunch Time Concert
  • Late Afternoon
  • Early evening before Dinner, 1 hour concert
  • After Dinner, evening concert
  • Dinner during intermission

8. How many people should I invite?

Any size audience that is appropriate for your home will be appropriate for a concert. Typically home concerts will have audiences between 15 and 50 people depending on the size of your home, the occasion, and the atmosphere you would like to create.
